Life-Giving Word

Remember the word to Your servant, upon which You have caused me to hope. This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your word has given me life. —Psalms 119: 49-50 NKJV

What we say is based on our limited knowledge of events. Our knowledge of each other is limited by what is revealed, that is why we sometimes have to unsay things we have said. But God has perfect knowledge of us and world events and what He says about them stands the test of time because His Word is everlasting. “Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven…The entirety of God’s word is truth, and every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.” Psalms 119:89, 160 (NKJV)

God’s word is universal, efficacious, and accessible to all whether saved or unsaved, rich or poor; strong or weak, educated or uneducated. God’s word is my comfort in my troubles and affliction. God’s word is alive and life-giving.

In 2002, I was in hospital for six weeks with renal failure. When all hope seems lost, I kept remembering God’s promise, “I will give you back your health and heal your wounds…” Jeremiah 30:17 (NLT). No doubt, my Church family prayed but God’s word was the anchor that kept me afloat, hopeful and safe during my time of affliction.

The Psalmist said, “…Your word has given me life.” I love what the Bible teacher David Guzik said in his commentary on today’s scripture, he said: “All should remember (especially preachers) that the word of God gives life; the preacher does not give it life. It isn’t as if the poor, dead word of God lay lifeless until the wonderful preacher came and breathed life into it. Instead, the word of God gives life – especially to dead preachers.”

This is what King David said concerning the word of God: “The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living. Reverence for the Lord is pure, lasting forever. The laws of the Lord are true; each one is fair. They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb. They are a warning to your servant, a great reward for those who obey them.” Psalms 19:7-11 (NLT)

So where do you find comfort in times of trouble? Is it in self-help books, Facebook, other social media platforms or do you lose hope and just give up?

Thank You LORD for giving us the grace to hope in Your Word and promises. Thank You because You will not allow us to hope in vain or without cause. Your Word is life giving!

Stay blessed,

  1. Great post! I have learned over the years that hope and encouragement can be found in different places, but there is no hope like the hope the lord gives to us. His hope is real and it is lasting, more than enough to carry us through the difficult seasons of life.
