Do Your Part

It was the harvest season, and the Jordan was overflowing its banks. But as soon as the feet of the priests who were carrying the Ark touched the water at the river’s edge, the water above that point began backing up a great distance away at a town called Adam, which is near Zarethan. And the water below that point flowed on to the Dead Sea until the riverbed was dry. Then all the people crossed over near the town of Jericho. Joshua 3:15-16 (NLT)

Many times, when we pray for a miracle God answers but most times, He wants us to be involved in that miracle.

As the Israelites were about to cross the River Jordan, God gave them instructions through Joshua – their new leader. They, as a nation, had a part to play in the next miracle God was about to perform, as seen in the verses above.

I wonder if the parting of River Jordan was a confirmation of God’s miraculous deeds to the Israelites that weren’t born or too young to comprehend what happened during the parting of the Red Sea.

At the Red Sea, Moses had a part to play in the deliverance of the children of Israel. “Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving! Pick up your staff and raise your hand over the sea. Divide the water so the Israelites can walk through the middle of the sea on dry ground.’” Exodus 14:15-16 (NLT)

When the Israelites fought their first war in the wilderness against the Amalekites, Joshua, Moses, Aaron and Hur had an important involvement in that battle. Joshua had to choose the men to take to war.  While Moses stood at the top of a nearby hill with the staff of God held up in his hand and accompanied by Aaron and Hur to intercede for Joshua and his men.

In the Bible, when God is about to do a miracle or someone prays for a miracle, He would give instructions. Most times, God instructs them to do something that in human reasoning or understanding does not make sense. Like commanding the Israelites to walk around the wall of Jericho to secure their victory. Or Elijah telling the widow in debt with only a small flask of olive oil to borrow empty jars from friends and neighbours. And instructs her to pour the little oil she has into each jar until they are full.

In the new testament, at the wedding of Cana in Galilee when the wine finished, Jesus gave instructions before he performed that miracle. All these people received their miracle because they had faith in God’s word and were willing to obey God. There aren’t that many miracles in the Bible without instructions beforehand.

Likewise, salvation is a miracle. It is a gift of God and not based on works, however, the Bible says, “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart…you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 (NKJV)

For you to receive your miracle, your part is to have faith and be willing to obey God’s instructions even if it doesn’t make sense. You can’t sit back, fold your arms and expect the miracle to fall into your lap. Instead, take a step of faith, set the ball rolling and watch God in action!

Stay blessed,
