Peace! Be Still

“…I, the Lord, define the ocean’s sandy shoreline as an everlasting boundary that the waters cannot cross. The waves may toss and roar, but they can never pass the boundaries I set.” — Jeremiah 5:22 NLT

The UK has seen a few storms recently. In January 2026 alone, we’ve had Storms Goretti, Ingrid, and the latest being Chandra, which is currently battering the Southwest of England with gusting winds and driving rain.

We’ve also heard of the deadly winter storm battling parts of the U.S which brought massive snowfall, knocked out power and crippled travel.

The storms usually leave many areas under floodwaters, with fallen trees, buckled rail tracks, and many people reporting extensive damage to their properties. Homeowners with no building and contents insurance are particularly affected, having to find thousands of pounds to repair their homes.

We’ve all experienced some form of storm. For example, failing health, financial struggles, joblessness, loss of a loved one, relationship breakdown, etc.

We can take comfort from today’s scripture. The raging sea, as a metaphor for forces such as those listed above, can appear devastating. The truth is, just as the sea has limits because God sets their boundaries, God remains in control over your storms, and they will not overwhelm you.

The disciples of Jesus experienced their own storm, and Jesus was there to calm it.  “Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, ‘Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!’ Jesus responded, ‘Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!’ Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. The disciples were amazed. ‘Who is this man?’ they asked. ‘Even the winds and waves obey him!’” Matthew 8: 23-27 (NLT)

Celebrating the wonders of God, His Majesty and His all-surpassing greatness whilst in the middle of a storm is extremely hard. Singing songs of praise to God is one of the hardest things to do when we are going through hard times. But God always gives the grace and faith to do this and live through these times.

We may have cried, prayed, and fasted for God to change a situation, and faithfully, God may change the situation or choose to change us instead. God expects us to have a changed attitude during these times of storms, battles, afflictions, and challenges.

Celebrate God’s greatness amidst your storms and see Him show up to calm every contrary wind. “You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You because he trusts in You.” Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV)

Lord Jesus, as we celebrate Your Majesty, I ask on behalf of my friends, family and the Church to show up in the storms of their lives. Let your peace reign, guarding their hearts and minds, Amen.

Stay blessed,

LaraLex
