The Right Time is Now!

Whatever you find to do with your hands, do it with all your might, because there is neither work nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom in the grave, the place where you will eventually go. — Ecclesiastes 9:10 NET

The saying “time waits for no one” is a truth that forces us to want to live deliberately, meaningfully and purposefully. Time does not often wait for us to get our act together; it silently and gently moves on relentlessly and we’re left wondering where the time has gone.

In the same book of Ecclesiastes (chapter 3), the urgency of the saying is captured in the words – “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” From this statement, there is a sense for all to make each moment count, especially in our relationships and care for each other, in pursuing justice and mercy.

Procrastination is a stealer of time. There is no better time to do what has been assigned to us than right now. We don’t have all the time in the world to do what we need to do because we live on borrowed time. Putting off what needs to be done to another time or day is like the saying in political parlance: “Kicking the can down the road.”

Many times, I’ve had in mind to call someone, and I tell myself I will do it when I get home or when I finish what I’m doing. But the reality is that, in most cases, I never get to make the call. I’m sure this will resonate with most of you!

No one is guaranteed tomorrow. What we have is today and now. We don’t have later. No matter how we may want to spiritualise, philosophise or objectify it, tomorrow may never come, it may never be ours.

My heart goes out to the families of the people who died in the dreadful and catastrophic Air India plane crash. Many who died—including those in the doctors’ residence on the ground—they all had plans, dreams and unfinished missions, businesses or stories. That morning, someone may have kissed a loved one goodbye but not knowing it was the last time. Some may have planned to have breakfast with loved ones or friends, little did they know that tomorrow would not arrive.

There’s no better time to do what needs to be done. It’s not too late to make a start. The right time is now. So, go ahead and write that song. Learn that musical instrument. Take up that course of study. Call that friend or family member. Make up and forgive that person. Take that trip you’ve always thought or dreamed about. Write and publish that book. Plant that tree and herbs. Build or refurbish that house. Make that personality and character change. Share the Gospel.

Our scripture today reminds us that life is transient. The opportunity to act, create, serve, or love, the right time is now!

Stay blessed,
