Tick Says the Clock!

Whatever you find to do with your hands, do it with all your might, because there is neither work nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom in the grave, the place where you will eventually go. — Ecclesiastes 9:10 NET

Today’s Bible passage might seem slightly morbid; however, it’s the truth we all have to face sooner or later. The best way to approach this verse is to take it to heart and consider it daily as sound advice.

I was recently chatting with a dear friend, and we reminisced on the past. We met over two decades ago and at the time, our children were in primary school; now they are adults either working or studying. Our parents, whom we thought were old then, were still spring chickens and now we know what old really looks like! Professionally, we were still finding ourselves back then, while now we are established familywise, we know what we are good at and we somehow know what we want in life.

We spoke about how quickly time had flown by and then my friend reminded me of a nursery rhyme we used to recite growing up: “Tick says the clock, tick, tick. What you have to do, do quick!”

Just like the nursery rhyme, the Bible also reminds us of the essence of time. “Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” James 4:14 (ESV)

Life is short, one minute you think you have all the time in the world; before you know it, opportunities have passed, and you only have regrets.

What has God put on your heart to do? Reconciling with a friend or family member, a certain project to embark on, a course to take or to give a message or support to someone? Today is the day and the time to get it done is now. Procrastination is just a stealer of time.

Anything you need to do with your children while they are still with you, do it because before you know it, they are grown and starting their own lives, while you are left watching them with regrets over things you have left undone.

The Psalmist prayed, “Teach us how short our life is, so that we may become wise.” Psalm 90:12 (GNT). I believe this is a prayer we should pray daily, so we don’t waste time doing or chasing after unproductive things but live for God’s glory because time is certainly not waiting for anyone.

Stay blessed,
