I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. — Psalm 121:1-2 ESV

It only seemed like yesterday when we welcomed the New Year and now, we are nearly at the end of the second month!
At the same time for most, the same problems they experienced last year were carried into the New Year and still seem unresolved. To be honest, marking a new year doesn’t solve our problems, it just gives hope for better things to come. Just like the saying, “If there is life, there is hope”. It is also why each new day is a blessing.
Life will never be free of problems but where we look for the solutions, can make a real difference. Also, not all problems will be solved or solved in the way we want but how you handle the outcome, can either give you peace of mind or an unsettled one.
The Psalmist said, “I lift up my eyes to the hills…” Even though he looked to the hills (some versions say mountains), his help didn’t come from there. The hills and mountains can be places, people or organisations higher than one’s current position. What hills do you currently look up to? Your job, money, doctors, pastors, family or friends?
The Psalmist looked to the hills but realised the help he needed came from far beyond the hills or mountains. His help came from the Lord who created the hills and mountains and He is far above them all. “My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”
God is the great provider of all things and He uses all things He created in the way He chooses, even when providing help for us. He chose to use ravens to feed Elijah (1 Kings 17). “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.” Proverbs 21:1 (NKJV)
I have recently been studying the life of George Muller (1805 -1898), an evangelist and the director of Muller Homes, an orphanage in Bristol. He understood how to fully trust in God’s provision for himself, his family and the orphanage. It was said that Muller started the orphanage to prove to the world that God answers prayers.
Most of the time, we already have an idea of where we want our help to come from and only ask God to approve and bless those avenues. Such behaviour or mentality isn’t right because God sees much more than we can and knows the best places to provide help for us when we need it.
So, just like the Psalmist, we need to see far above the mountains and hills. We need to fully trust the God of heaven and earth, the great Provider to provide for us in miraculous and unexpected ways.
Stay blessed,
