Get Wisdom!

The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight. – Proverbs 4:7 ESV

The Book of Proverbs has a lot to say about wisdom and the wise. Here are some more verses:

“Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth.” Proverbs 4:5 (ESV)

“Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold.” Proverbs 3:13 -14 (ESV)

But how do we get this wisdom? The Bible makes it sound like it’s something you can buy or get from a particular place. Even Job asked the same puzzling question: “But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?… From where, then, does wisdom come?… God understands the way to it, and he knows its place…And he said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’” Job 28: 12, 20, 23 and 28 (ESV)

We are not talking about wisdom from acquiring many educational qualifications or living long on the earth. In fact, many who profess to be wise today, rely mainly on their educational achievements and make decisions accordingly. It is the wisdom of this age that is turning the world upside down with the weird practices, policies and laws we’re getting “accustomed” to. “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God…” 1 Corinthians 3:19 (NLT)

The very first place to find wisdom is in God. Solomon understood this and knew who could give it to him.

“At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon…and God said, ‘Ask what I shall give you’… ‘Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?’ It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this.  And God said to him, ‘Because you have asked this…Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you.’” 1 King 3: 5, 9-12 (ESV)

To have a wise and discerning heart, we need to turn to God. And Solomon as one of the authors of the Book of Proverbs, said it repeatedly in different ways – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge…” Proverbs 1: 7, 9:10, 10:27 (ESV)

God has given us everything we need to be wise, and we must be willing to accept and take it all onboard daily. He gives us guidelines through His Word – the Bible. Through His Holy Spirit – “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you” John 14:26 (ESV). And God surrounds us with people that we can emulate and seek out for advice. “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” Proverbs 13:20 (ESV)

With these provisions, it is in our hands to Get Wisdom!

Stay blessed,
