No Bread!

At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn’t brought any bread. Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, “Why are you arguing about having no bread? Don’t you know or understand even yet? Are your hearts too hard to take it in?”— Mark 8:16-17 NLT

This story in the book of Mark chapter 8, both amazed and saddened me. Jesus was with His disciples when the above incident took place.

By this time Jesus had done so many miracles in their presence. To mention a few, He healed the man of unclean spirit, cured a man with leprosy (chapter 1), healed the paralytic (chapter 2), healed the man with a withered hand (chapter 3). He calmed the storm, healed the demonic man and the woman with discharge of blood and raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead (chapter 5). Then most significantly, Jesus fed thousands of people from nearly nothing twice in their presence – five thousand (chapter 6) and four thousand (chapter 8) and in both cases there were plenty leftovers.

Not long after feeding the second thousands, Jesus and His disciples embarked on a journey by boat. But the disciples started worrying that they only have one loaf of bread. Really! After all that Jesus had done in their presence!

Even Jesus confirmed and confronted them by saying; “‘You have eyes—can’t you see? You have ears—can’t you hear?’ Don’t you remember anything at all? When I fed the 5,000 with five loaves of bread, how many baskets of leftovers did you pick up afterward?’ ‘Twelve,’ they said. ‘And when I fed the 4,000 with seven loaves, how many large baskets of leftovers did you pick up?’ ‘Seven,’ they said. ‘Don’t you understand yet?’ he asked them.’” Mark 8:18-21 (NLT)

Likewise, sadly we can be exactly like the disciples. The Lord has performed many miracles in our lives – from the greatest of all, the salvation of our souls, to various healing miracles, deliverance from trials and troubles and so on. But after all these, we can still find ourselves displaying lack of faith by worrying over very minor or insignificant issues, just like the disciples did.

For example, you’ve been seeking for a job for a while and God provides one. Our joy can quickly turn from praise for what He’s done, to worrying that you might not be able to do the job well.  Why worry about that? The God who provided the job is more than able to give you the wisdom to do it, all you have to do is ask – “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” James 1:5 (ESV)

Shirley Caesar said in her song:

He’ll do it again,

He’ll do it again

If you’ll just take a look at where you are now
And where you’ve been
Hasn’t He always come through for you
He’s the same now as then (Don’t you know God has not changed)
You may not know how, you may not know when
But He’ll do it again!

We all have issues that we worry about, but we need to remember that our God is more than able and if He answered your prayers in the past, He will definitely do it again!

Stay blessed,
