The Law – All or Nothing? (Part 2)

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain and be there; and I will give you tablets of stone, and the law and commandments which I have written, that you may teach them.”— Exodus 24:12 NKJV

You can just imagine the chaos, disorder, and lawlessness in a society, family or community without rules!

Prior to the flood and the law, people basically did whatever they saw fit. Their actions were right in their eyes.

Even though people knew what was good and right, evil and wickedness prevailed and were the order of the day. “The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart.” Genesis 6: 5-6 (NLT).

Then came the law, given to Moses by God.

Where there is no law, there is no sin! But the truth is that sin has always been present in the world even though there was no law to guide the people.

I used to think that the law of Moses and the law of God are two separate laws. I’ve always thought that the “law of God” which was given to Moses was the Ten Commandments written by the finger of God on tablets of stone. “The Lord gave me the two tablets on which God had written with his own finger all the words he had spoken to you from the heart of the fire when you were assembled at the mountain.” Deuteronomy 9:10 (NLT).

I also thought that the law of Moses was the rules, statutes, commands, principles, and instructions, which were specifically given to the Israelites to set them apart from their neighbours.

The law of Moses and the law of God are one and the same. The law of God is not just the Ten Commandments, but all the statutes, precepts, commands, and regulations as contained in the Mosaic law. “And now, Israel, listen carefully to these decrees and regulations that I am about to teach you. Obey them so that you may live, so you may enter and occupy the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. Do not add to or subtract from these commands I am giving you. Just obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you.” Deuteronomy 4:1-2 (NLT)

God is the originator of the law of Moses. The law of Moses is the law of God as commanded by God and delivered by Moses. “Look, I now teach you these decrees and regulations just as the Lord my God commanded me, so that you may obey them in the land you are about to enter and occupy.” Deuteronomy 4:5 (NLT)

In the next blog, we will talk about what the law brought with it.

Stay blessed,
