Humble and Cast (Part 3)

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt youcasting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. – 1 Peter 5:6-7 ESV

Moses spent most of his early years in Pharaoh’s palace, living and identifying with them. However, most likely due to the time spent with his real family, he sensed that he didn’t belong with Pharaoh’s family.

He fled Egypt as a prince, returning as a shepherd to demand Israel’s release from slavery. After a brief hesitation and resistance, Moses humbled himself, cast all his concerns and fears on the LORD, returned to Egypt to face Pharaoh at God’s command. His task was enormous, and he understood that he couldn’t do it alone.

He constantly sought God’s presence and help as he led the Israelites. Even when God threatened to destroy all the Israelites because of their rebellion and preserve Moses’ descendants, he still pleaded Israel’s case. “Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth.” Numbers 12:3 (NKJV)

King David is another example we can emulate. He was anointed as king even before his encounter with Goliath, which could have been an opportunity to establish himself as king. Instead, he submitted himself to Saul’s authority and persecution, going on the run when his life was in danger.

He trusted God to work things out in His own time. The book of Psalms is evidence of David’s humility and how he cast his cares and anxieties on the Lord. In everything he did, he did not run ahead of God’s timing. For example, when he initially became king, he ruled only in Hebron and was there for seven years.

“Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, ‘Behold, we are your bone and flesh. In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the Lord said to you, “You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over Israel.”’ So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. At Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.” 2 Samuel 5:1-5 (ESV)

David could have forced the rest of Israel to accept him as king which could have involved a lot of bloodshed. Instead, he trusted God to bring things together in His own time and it happened peacefully.

There are numerous examples in the Bible of people who humbly followed and cast their all on the Lord that we can learn from. No matter what you are going through at the moment, remember our God is “… able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,” Ephesian 3:20 (NKJV)
