Then the man bowed down and worshiped the Lord, saying, “Praise be to the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.” – Genesis 24:26-27 NIV
I remember doing a long journey alone once and l felt I needed to take my power bank with me which was unusual. I was using my phone as satnav and knew the power socket in the car wasn’t working but I never really thought I would need it. However, on my way back there were problems on the roads and a journey of three and a half hours took over seven hours. The power bank was a lifesaver, without it my phone battery would have died, and I would have struggled to get home.
Some might think travelling with the power bank was good planning, but I don’t see it that way. I tremble whenever I consider how I could have been stranded in the middle of nowhere at night with no means of getting home. I thank God for leading me to take the power bank and for me, it wasn’t good planning, luck or coincidence, it was divine intervention.
In today’s scripture, Abraham’s senior servant is given the huge task of going to his master’s hometown to find a wife for Isaac. Abraham’s servant had his doubts but embarked on the journey anyway.
When I read the servant’s prayer in Genesis 24:12-14, I sense that he isn’t a firm believer in God, but he had seen the hand of God in Abraham’s life. So he decided to turned to the God of Abraham for help. He understood the magnitude of the assignment given to him and knew he needed help to succeed. And God in his infinite mercy answered and divinely intervened. “Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder…” Genesis 24:15 (NIV)
The servant struck up a conversation with Rebekah at the well and later realised that she was a relative of Abraham. Because he understood God had divinely intervened and there was no way he could have succeeded on his own, he worshipped God.
As Christians, nothing that happens to us is just a coincidence, by chance or luck. “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them” Romans 8:28 (NLT).
Perhaps you’ve had many situations which you put down as good planning, luck or coincidence. God in His sovereignty uses different circumstances and situations to divinely accomplish His purpose for us.
Our family have had many divine interventions and l believe yours have had too. Sometimes we may sense that God is leading us through his Spirit and may not understand why, but we need to trust Him.
Just as in the day of Abraham, God is still at work today. Let us acknowledge and worship Him for His divine interventions in our everyday life and in the world in general.
Stay blessed,
