Trust

We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield…for we trust in his holy name. Psalms 33:20-21 (NLT)

These days it is so easy to put trust in the things around us – jobs, wealth, medicine, people, power and so on. But when these things fail, where do you go?

It is sad when we hear of prominent and seemly successful people committing suicide. I wonder how hopeless they must have got to think that death was the only solution. They must have lost hope, maybe because things didn’t work out as they expected and there must have been nowhere to turn. They obviously couldn’t see things getting better in the future and they couldn’t trust anyone to help either.

Job was a rich man but he remembered who blessed him. It must have been one of the reasons after the onslaught of disasters that he was able to say, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord.” Job 1:21 (NKJV)

Even Job’s wife couldn’t cope with the situation that she told him to curse God and die, but he replied, “‘…Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?’ In all this Job did not sin with his lips.” Job 2:10 (NKJV)

He also knew where to turn with his sorrow. If he had thought his accomplishments were his own doing, when it all fell apart, he would have had nowhere to turn. But Job had someone to turn to – God, his Provider. He was even bold enough to ask God for answers.

King David was a successful king and he saw God as his Shield, King, Helper, Refuge, Shepherd, Rock, the list goes on. Like Job, David was the same, whenever he was in trouble, he would turn to God and sometimes vented his feelings.

These godly men teach us that success and wealth don’t have to be separate from God because it all comes from him. Solomon said in Psalms 127:1 (NLT), “Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the Lord protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good.”

David also says, The best-equipped army cannot save a king, nor is great strength enough to save a warrior. Don’t count on your warhorse to give you victory—for all its strength, it cannot save you. But the Lord watches over those who fear him, those who rely on his unfailing love.” Psalms 33:16-18 (NLT)

There is nothing in this world – riches, success, power, possessions, etc – that can truly satisfy without God. The writer of Ecclesiastes said, “Everything is meaningless…” Ecclesiastes 1:2 (NLT). He must have found out the hard way that nothing really satisfies but God.

Everything we have is for our enjoyment and to bless others but done acknowledging God. Once we have God at the forefront of our mind, no matter what happens around us or with our possessions, we’ll be unmoveable. And like David, we’ll be able to say, “We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield…for we trust in His holy name.”

Stay blessed,

  1. In a conversation recently, my friend said, “In crisis, who or where you run to shows who or what you trust”. So true.

‘Trust’ is a very expensive commodity/virtue these days.

In I John 3:*14 to 4:1-*20, in its description of how we ought to love it might be comparable to ‘trust’.

If we say we trust God and can’t trust our brothers or sisters because their words are not reliable or trustworthy, especially if they’re Christians, then trusting God may be impaired.

    Examples are:
    – a child abused by a father-figure may struggle with the Fatherhood of God.
    – a person rejected, abandoned, deceived or betrayed may struggle to trust again in another relationship.

If our ‘No’ or ‘Yes’ cannot be trusted, if we promise and fail to fulfil our vows, those affected by the empty promises may struggle.

We each have a responsibility towards one another. We should ensure that our actions don’t impair another’s life.

While we have a personal relationship with Christ, we’re a body of believers connected and our actions affect others in the way they ultimately relate with/to God. It’s a huge responsibility but God, by His Spirit enables us to reflect Him.

I pray, Lord, while we look to You, may we not be callous to neglect those around us who may look to us to mirror Your likeness. That while we trust You, Father, please help us to live with the sensitivity of the Holy Spirit to be people whose words can be trusted.

    Thanks so much😀
